The black expanse, frosted with fiery stars
Twinkles of light shine against the nebulous black canvas
The only noise
The sight of it though, everyone has seen
What would we do if one night it refused to return?
The darkness gives us permission to close our eyes
The darkness behind our eyelids barricades us from our own thoughts
We find serenity in our subconscious.
It is the ominous blanket that engulfs us
Engulfs us as we scrape off the dinner dishes into a disposal of memories of
Engulfs us as our brains beat relentlessly against
Trying tirelessly to chase after
Trying to do what it can do to change its previous thoughts so they won’t turn into lingering regrets.
I’ll bet you never realized how magnificently eerie it is.
That moment when you are suspended
In this vast expanse with 100 precious and irrelevant strangers
Only separated from the vacuous, gaping, age-old sky of darkness
Merely by Plexiglas.
